Become Involved In Your Area

In our research, we have found three websites to be very helpful to patients and caregivers when getting involved in with support groups in their community.

To ensure that you find a group that fits your needs, the National Cancer Institute provides information on how to begin your search for a support organization.

When selecting a cancer support group in your area, keep in mind that cancer organizations can focus on different areas: all types of cancer or just one, patient and caregiver specific groups and groups that cater to specific needs such as religion or culture.  Different organizations may also offer different services such as a focus on fundraising or advocacy.

Service and support organizations offer help to patients and caregivers to make sure no one has to face cancer alone. Telephone hotline counselors, cancer emotional support programs and referral programs are just a few types of service organizations.

Awareness programs are another way to get involved in your community.  Awareness programs are designed to raise awareness and to join in the fight against cancer. These types of organizations are designed to educate people about the disease and how to prevent cancer.

Fundraising organizations raise money to provide a variety of services to people and cancer research. Events are a common way to raise money and awareness about cancer. Such events include walks, races, dinners and many other entertainment activities.  Participating and volunteering your time during these events are a great way to stay connected in your community.
