Cancer Fighter Activities

Support Our Troops!

In March 2009, a group of more than 50 Cancer Fighters joined forces with CTCA stakeholders and people from surrounding communities to collect donations of food, toiletries, reading material.  The volunteers gathered to prepare over 150 individual care packages for American Troups overseas.  One hundred care packages were mailed to a local soldier and his unit, Michael Negron and the 511th Engineer Company stationed in Iraq.  Michael is the son of Cancer Fighter, Rose Sajuan.  The remainder of the packages were mailed to individual soldiers and loved ones, identified by Cancer Fighters, CTCA stakeholders and our partners in the community.

Cancer Fighters who attended mentioned that they enjoyed meeting new Cancer Fighters and coming together to have a positive impact on the lives of others in their community.  We look forward to bringing more opportunities to meet friends and "give back" in the future!

Gilda's Club Tour

On March 27, 2009 Cancer Fighters took a bus from the hospital in Zion to enjoy a Night Together in Chicago.

They toured Gilda’s Club Chicago, a free support community for men, women & children whose lives have been touched by cancer, and their family and friends.  They offer programs for social and emotional support and all of their activities are absolutely free.  To learn more, you can visit their website: gildasclubchicago.org

Immediately following the tour, the 65 members enjoyed dinner downtown at Maggiano’s.

The guest speaker was Jonny Imerman from Imerman Angels, an amazing organization and resource for Cancer Fighters, that connects a person fighting cancer today (“cancer fighter”) with someone who has beaten the same type of cancer (“cancer survivor”).  The relationship provides unique opportunities for fighters and survivors.  The service is absolutely free and helps anyone touched by any type of cancer, at any cancer stage level, at any age, living anywhere in the world. To learn more about Imerman Angels, you can visit their website:  imermanangels.org.

Cancer Fighters learned new ways to reach out and help others.  They better understand some of the local resources available to them and their family.  It was a great opportunity for education, fun and fellowship.
